The Archipelago

Walk through the work as a game

I came in on that boat at dawn. Everything I've shipped lives on these islands — the ERP that runs a factory floor, two products with real users, six certificates that changed how I work — and the lighthouse stays dark until you've walked them all. About seven minutes.

Start playingOne goal: light the lighthouse before dark.

What is on the islands

  • The harbor at dawn: a plank jetty on piles, a thatched warung with a striped awning, palms, crates and barrels.
Harbor, dawn — where the boat drops you, the warung, and the logbook.
  • Workshop Island in the morning: a corrugated shed with a conveyor of crates, market stalls with orange hip roofs and screens showing real projects.
Workshop Island, morning — twelve shipped projects and the ERP shed.
  • Product Cove in the afternoon: a plaster gym with a glass storefront and a dumbbell sign, the carwash canopy beside it.
Product Cove, afternoon — a gym and a carwash, both real, both running.
  • The lighthouse at dusk: red and white bands, lit lamp posts around the island, dark peaks on the horizon.
The Lighthouse, dusk — six lamps for six certificates, and the tower door.

How it works

  1. 1/3

    Walk the islands

W A S D or a touch stick, drag to look, Space to jump, M for the map. Sandbars join the four islands at low tide.

  2. 2/3

    Open the exhibits

Every stall, building and lamp is a real project, product or certificate. Each one you open is a commit in your logbook; pin one on the map and the compass leads you there.

  3. 3/3

    Light the lighthouse before dark

Six certificates light six lamps. When the last one is lit, the tower door opens and the day ends from the top.

Before you set sail

The Archipelago is a small 3D world that runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed. It will download about 0.4 MB of code and textures, use your graphics chip, and can drain a laptop or phone battery faster than a normal page. It works best in a desktop browser or on a recent phone. Your progress is saved on this device only.

Move: W A S D or arrow keys · Look: drag with the mouse · Jump: Space · Interact: E or Enter · Menu: Esc. On touch: left thumb to move, drag to look, tap the buttons to jump and interact.
